10 Apps To Help Detox Your Sleep

1. Sleep Cycle Alarm

If you’re used to feeling as if you need more sleep every time you wake up, or if you can’t even function without first having that cup of java, then you may want to try out the Sleep Cycle alarm clock. What’s neat about this app is that it can actually measure your movements when you go to sleep through a little gyro that’s inside of your iPhone. All you do is place it beside your pillow every night when you go to sleep and the app will then track and monitor your sleep patterns throughout the night. When you wake up in the morning, you’ll then be able to check out a graph that shows your sleep patterns.

The best part about this app is the innovative alarm function. The alarm gently wakes you up when it senses that you are in “shallow sleep”, making it easier for you to get up in the morning (i.e. if you set your alarm for 6am, the app may wake you at 5:50am because it senses that that’s the best time to sound the alarm).

2. Andrew Johnson - Deep Relaxation

Have a hard time unwinding after a long day? Then soothe yourself with the lulling, Sean Connery-esque voice of Andrew Johnson and learn how to fall into a state of deep relaxation. This great little app is essentially a form of hypnotherapy that will help you both relax and then fall asleep at the end of a busy day.

The newest version of the app available here:

3. Awaken

Awaken is a great app for both falling asleep and waking up. There are several neat little features that come with this app, such as a timer, a clock, a sleep mode and an alarm that is completely customizable. The alarm is the best feature of this app, allowing you to either wake up to your very own music or you can choose to awaken to built-in sound clips and sounds that come with the app. Another nice feature is that it offers a “fading in” of your music, so you aren’t woken up by a blaring alarm and are able to wake up gradually and peacefully.  There’s also an “auto stop” time function, so you can program your alarm to stop after a self-determined amount of time. Awaken is available for  mac.

4. Deep Sleep with Andrew Johnson

Here’s another great app that Andrew Johnson has developed to help ease us into a deep sleep. This app is fantastic for anyone who has even a slight sleeping problem. Johnson provides you with a guided meditation that helps first put you into a more relaxed sleep, and eventually guides your body into falling into a deep, deep sleep. The soothing instructions for breathing and relaxing help you release the stress from the day, and it can easily be used as part of your regular nighttime routine.

5. Long Deep Breathing

Looking for an app that’s easy to use and that will put you into a calm state before bed? Then check out Long Deep Breathing. This simple, “no-frills” app will help you learn how to breathe deeply so that you not only will be able to rest easier at night, but also learn how to distress during the day.

This app works based on a “breathing gauge”. Visual cues will show up on screen which tell you when to inhale and when to exhale. You can adjust the length of each breath as you improve. While most of us breathe 12-16 times a minute, this app will have you breathing significantly less and allow you to truly unwind.

6. Rest and Relax Guided Meditation

If you don’t have the time to throw in a CD and try to learn how to meditate that way, then this handy app will make it easier for you.  This app offers three different types of meditations:  breath meditations, deep rest meditations or whole body meditations. You can choose which you feel is most suitable for you depending on what you feel you need for the day. Each type has different durations, with breath taking 5 minutes, deep rest taking 13 and whole body taking 24 minutes. You can choose to have music or no music, and once you’re set, you can then start your meditation. There are also a ton of great meditation tips include in this app that will allow you to fully reap all of the benefits of your meditation.

7. Relaxing Ambiance

If you love falling to sleep to the sounds of nature, then this app is definitely for you.  This app allows you to choose from 56 different sounds including: beach ambiance, forest streams, waterfall, crickets, waves, and forest streams. You can adjust the volume at any time, and you can also mix the sounds together to create your very own sleep songs. Each of the sounds is accompanied by a fantastic theme image that will take you away to where ever you want to go – the jungle, the beach, and more.

What’s also neat is that you’re able to set the sounds up for your morning alarm too, making getting out of bed easier and much more restful than a blaring alarm or the radio.

8. Proactive Sleep

No matter how well or how horribly you think you sleep, this app can benefit anyone.  This multifunction app includes the basics, such as an alarm clock with a snooze feature as well as ambient music to help you wake up. But what makes it even more interesting is that it allows you to keep a “sleep diary”. The sleep diary allows you to track how much sleep you’re getting, when you’re having difficulty sleeping, how much exercise you’re getting, what your caffeine consumption is, and more so that you can fully analyze your pre- and post-sleep behaviors and see how they may be affecting your rest.

You can view your sleep any day of the week, or in 7 day or 30 day cycles.

This app offers a whole lot more than most other apps, which contributes to its higher cost. There are several different scientific techniques built into it, such as neurological programming and binaural beats. These create one billion customized soundtrack combinations that will help put you to rest. You can also choose from 3 fully customizable, different modes: Energizer, Meditation, and Sleep.
