Are Your Cosmetics Slowly Poisoning You?
In our modern societies illness are still a common occurrence. People get a cold, they get the flu, they get a headache from time to time. When we fall prey to some type of illness, we tend to point the finger at a type of virus or bacteria, but maybe you should try pointing the finger at your deodorant or your lipstick.
Surprised? Most people are. After all, companies wouldn’t manufacture and sell us things that they know are harmful and detrimental to our health... right?
Sadly, this is far from the truth. Cosmetic companies continually put out products that are loaded with tons of toxins, some being carcinogenic (cancer-causing chemicals), other being mutagens (cell mutations that result in cancer), teratogens (birth defect causing toxins), developmental toxins (chemicals that are hazardous to unborn children), reproductive toxins (chemicals that destroy male and female fertility), and skin toxins. What’s even worse is that none of these hazardous chemicals even need to be in our products in the first place.
Let’s begin by clarifying just what is considered to be a ‘cosmetic’ and what is not. Cosmetics are not just limited to makeup; the word ‘cosmetic’ refers to anything that we apply to our body. This includes soap, shampoo, toothpaste, mouthwash, shaving cream and deodorant. The packaging looks nice, the cosmetics feel nice, and they smell nice but what they do to our bodies is the exact opposite, thanks to the deadly and poisonous chemicals contained within.
Here’s another alarming fact: There are some countries that still do not force cosmetic companies to put the ingredients that they use on their products on the packaging. Worse yet, some countries ban specific ingredients, while others let those same poisonous ingredients be used. Some countries seem to fail to be aware that whatever we put ONTO our bodies also goes INTO our bodies. Our skin isn’t an impenetrable barrier, it’s a large organ that breathes and soaks things in.
You may think that whatever is in that shaving cream you put on your skin isn’t doing any harm, but most of the deadly chemical molecules that are contained in that product are actually able to sink into our skin, move into our blood stream and from there course through our entire body. These hazardous materials can stay in our body for anywhere from a number of hours to a number of days, causing horrible and oftentimes irreparable damage.
The Worst Offenders
There are plenty of chemicals that can be found in our cosmetics that are poisonous (a full, comprehensive list can be found on http://www.ewg.org/skindeep), but some are definitely worse than others. Some are found in more cosmetics than others, so it’s important to stay informed and be aware of how you may be unknowingly placing your life in harm’s way.
Mercury
This heavy metal is the worst of the offenders. It causes a number of problems, from cancer to birth defects to immunity disorders and more. It’s also an untested chemical but it can easily penetrate our bodies not only through our skin, but we can also breathe it in as well. Exposure to mercury can have short term affects like diarrhea, coughing and shortness of breath and cause a fever, but long term effects include cancer, kidney and endocrine system damage, central nervous system damage, and several immunity disorders.
Other names for mercury to be aware of are:
- Thimerosal
- Mercurius Solubilis
- Mercurius Sublimatus
- Mercuric Chloride
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
While you may not see mercury listed in a lot of common cosmetic products these days, one horrible toxin that you will find on a lot is sodium lauryl sulfate. This stuff was initially created to scrub and wash oily and dirty garage floors. It’s a powerful cleaner, and it has the ability to denature protein. This is a bit of a problem for us using products with this ingredient, since our bodies are made up of protein. Many manufacturers don’t care about that, however, and cram the stuff into common every-day products like toothpaste, shampoos, creams and lotions.
It should come as no surprise that this extremely powerful cleaning product can easily cause damage to the cells of our body, particularly our eyes (how often have we all gotten shampoo in our eyes or swallowed a bit of toothpaste?). Even more frightening is that sodium lauryl sulfate can actually combine with other ingredients that may be in the product and create what is called nitrosamines. Nitrosamines can cause skin irritation and damage, like eczema.
If you see sodium laureth sulfate on any products, it’s important to keep in mind that it is also toxic. It’s simply a more “mild” form of sodium lauryl sulfate, but ether has been added to it (and ether isn’t good for our bodies, either!).
Colours and Dyes
If you see a product that has colouring products on the back, like FD&C Blue No. 4, put it back down on the shelf and save your health. An alarming amount of cosmetic products out there all have unnecessary and deadly dyes put into them, and for what? To make the product look nicer. But this nicer looking product can possibly lead you to an early grave. Dyes are well known to be a carcinogen, but they are continually put into products – even a large number of “natural” or “organic” products!
Fragrances
Don’t be fooled; no rose petals were pressed to create that soft and flowery scented perfume you purchased. Anything that has perfume or “fragrance” added has just had an additional unnecessary 5000+ synthetic hydrocarbons mixed into it. Fragrances and perfumes go straight into our brain’s limbic system, and overtime, constant exposure can result in brain and nervous disorders. Currently researchers are studying to see if there is a connection between fragrances and many other diseases like chronic fatigue, multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia.
People are becoming even more and more sensitive to fragrances, and for a good reason. They are unnatural and our bodies are crying out, hoping that we stop bombarding ourselves with them. But more and more products are feeling the need to cram perfume and fragrances in to them, simply so that they can make some money at the expense of our health.
On that note, do not trust all essential oil fragrances either. You want to make sure that your essential oil products have been extracted properly through cold pressing or steam distillation. If the essential oil has been extracted through propylene glycol or benzene, then it’s just as bad as your common everyday poisonous fragrance.
Propylene Glycol
Wear lipstick? Then you’re wearing this deadly chemical on your face, too. Propylene glycol is anti-freeze, the very same product we use in our vehicles and the very same product we tell pet owners to keep away from their cats and dogs. When we ingest or come in contact with propylene glycol, it causes liver and kidney damage. It can also be stored in our bodies for weeks at a time, and can go so far as to alter our brains so that we feel anxious (and anxiety causes a whole bunch of other health problems!). Though found in almost every lipstick on the market, it can also be found in a large number of other cosmetics on the market, too.
Xeno-Estrogens
There is already what some would call an ‘estrogen epidemic' , meaning that modern males are coming in contact with and taking in estrogen more than they ever have before. Soy, which can “copy” estrogen, was the first product of concern. Now we have to turn our attention to cosmetics, many of which are full of xeno-estrogens. Not only does this chemical cause hormonal imbalances in women which causes problems with PMS and menopause, but men are suffering from a lower sperm count because of it, too. Xeno-estrogens have the ability to “mimic” our estrogen. It has the ability to talk to our other cells and tell them that it is estrogen when it is not. This completely throws our endocrine systems out of whack, and causes fertility problems in men.
DEA
Also known as diethanol amine, this chemical must be mentioned, since it is in a ton of our cosmetics, like shampoo and facial cleanser. Just as with some of the chemicals above, when DEA mixes with nitrogen-containing molecules, cancerous nitrosamines are created.
But that’s not all DEA can make. DEA can also mix with “good” products and create contaminants or, even worse, formaldehyde (which is a carcinogen).
