Life as it is today is not always a bed of roses; moments of joy, sadness, anxiety, and anger are all a part of it. An individual goes through thousands of these emotions in the course of a single day itself. But if it is sadness that is your constant companion then there is something you must do about it even though it is not an easy task. But with strong willpower you can make a huge difference.
When you are depressed it can feel like a daunting task to come out of it. But there are some things that you can do to deal with your depression such as:
Be more active
The minute we feel depressed we tend to retreat in to our shell and refuse to come out of it or from mixing with others. But this is not good for you. Socializing, going out, being around friends and family will keep you engaged and lift your mood.
If you don’t want to be around too many people, you can start with going out with a couple of your best friends first who understand you well and who you can talk to comfortably. Spend time with your family or do something that you always wanted to do. Try not to be lazy.
Have a routine
Usually when people are depressed, the first thing you would notice is that they become much disorganized. Waking up late, not eating on time, sleeping late and tiredness are usual with those who are depressed. But, the more you get pulled into these the more depressed you will be. Therefore, it is very important that you try to follow a certain routine in your life particularly at this time.
Wake up early in the morning, if you find it difficult join a class or some other activity so that you are compelled to wake up on time. It is not necessary that you would wake up on the first day itself on time but slowly you would fall into your new routine.
Have your meals on time, even though you don’t feel like having much. Try out the things you love to eat and stay away from unhealthy or comfort foods such as pasta, French fries, ice-creams. They may lift your mood temporarily but they would leave you tired and less energetic. Proper sleep is also a must for the better functioning of your body, so go to bed early and avoid staying up late at night.
Include Physical Activity
It has been shown that regular physical activity has a positive effect not only on your physical but also on your mental health. Exercise improves mood, reduces anxiety and also improves concentration boosting your self confidence and self esteem. It also gives you a feeling that things are in your control.
You can take up any type of exercise that you want; it can also be a fifteen minutes walk or taking part in some sports. Find an activity that suits you and you can stick to it. If you are one of those who do not like the idea of sports or leisure centre, you can join hands with community projects such as community gardens, park in your area and take an active part there.
Any form of exercise is better than doing none, so make sure that you do have some amount of physical activity in your life. It also helps to take your mind off the reasons for your depression.
Try not to stay alone
The very nature of depression makes it difficult for us to reach out to someone for help. But you should understand that your family and friends love you and they would always be willing to help you out if you allow them. Being around people who love you will make you feel less depressed.
Take part in social activities even if you don’t feel like it, this will keep your mind busy with other things and slowly you would once again start enjoying your social life. Share your problems or the reasons for you being depressed with the ones you trust most. Take their help and follow their suggestions.
If you don’t have anyone that you can talk to comfortably, you can also join support groups for depression. These support groups would have other people who are also undergoing a tough time. You can talk about your problems without any worries, seek suggestions or encourage others to cope better and share your experiences.
Keep it simple/Have simple goals
Start your day with simple goals that are easy to achieve and does not require much effort. If you set goals that are high and too complicated you may end up being depressed again if you are unable to complete them. Therefore, aim for something that is possible and not out of your reach such as you might like to assign yourself to go out for fifteen minutes for a coffee to the local coffee house or watch your favorite show tonight or just take a short walk at any time of the day. These goals are achievable and do not require much effort and once you get them done you will feel a sense of accomplishment and it will lift your mood for the day.
Take things one day at a time and you might also want to reward yourself for each of your accomplishments. However small these steps might be, it will add on later and help you in a speedy recovery from your condition. These small things might also help you achieve something which you never thought would have been possible such as taking a dance lesson that you had always wanted to.
Do not take alcohol
Some of us try to seek comfort by indulging ourselves in alcohol and drugs during hard times. But remember that it is not going to solve your problems and in the long run it might even lead you to severe depression. Instead of running away from your fears and problems face them bravely. If you find it difficult try to take help from your family or your friends to keep you away from alcohols and drugs.
It is important that you take medical help in case your depression has got worse. Take the medications as directed without skipping any pills or changing their doses.
