It’s almost a universal known fact that depression leads to alcohol abuse and alcohol related problems. With all the theories postulated in support of it, one had no issues with it but not anymore .

Theories seems to be constructed only to be slaughtered later , as recent research study conducted by New Zealand’s Christchurch school of medical and health sciences offers an arresting perspective that, alcohol abuse( over dependency on alcohol) only leads to depression not vice versa.

It’s not any mean research that one can doubt about. It is conducted for a period of around 25 years, so no one can raise questions about the effort and integrity put in to research. To investigate on relation between depression and alcohol abuse, scientists tracked about 1077 people born before 25 years back, through Christchurch development and health study. Participants were interviewed on three different various stages of their life, at ages of 18, 21 and 25.

Results were

  • At 18, some 19.4 % had alcohol problems and 18.2 % had depression.

  • At age of 21, some 22.4% had alcohol problems and 18.2% had major depression.

  • At age of 25, 13.6 % had alcohol problems and 13. 8% had major depression.

Researchers have used statistical methods to conclude that alcohol problems precede depression and they are major cause for depression. Even though researchers were quick to the fact that findings are suggestive rather than descriptive. They have also come to a logical conclusion that alcohol has some depressant characteristics which causes depression.

Many people turn to drinking, when they feel depressed, thinking that it can offer much needed solace knowledge which they gain through their peers and word of mouth. Results clearly indicate that drinking even though it may offer temporary relief, can no way aid in counteracting ones depression but it can only increase it further.

It clearly indicates that whatever we think becomes our own reality. People are very clearly dumped into a misconception for years together, that alcohol can be answer for their depression and suffering. Research has clearly enlightened fact that alcohol has no business in acting against ones depression. In fact if it has any role to play in human beings depression it is to increase it further.

Scientist should be complimented for their years of dedicated and sincere service which at last can prevent and rescue lot of people falling prey to alcohol in misconception and prejudice. They have indeed sowed the seeds to acquire delicious fruits in future.
