Haloperidol

Haloperidol is an antipsychotic drug. It works by altering the effect of neurochemicals in brain. It is used to treat schizophrenia, nausea, vomiting and speech tics in people with Tourette's syndrome.

 

Do not take haloperidol if you:

 

  1. Are allergic to haloperidol
  2. Suffer from a lesion that affects brain or brain disorder causing tremors, rigidity
  3. Are suffering from central nervous system depression  
  4. Have an abnormal heart rhythm or had a heart attack
  5. Are taking medicines that affects heart beat

 

Things to Tell Your Doctor. If you:

 

  1. Have a liver, kidney problem or heart problems
  2. Suffer from high blood pressure due to a tumor near the kidney, fits, mental disorders or thyroid gland disorders
  3. Have alcohol abuse
  4. Have had a history of blood clots or family history of blood clots
  5. Are an elderly patient with dementia
  6. Are not eating properly

 

What to do if you missed a dose ?

 

Do not take a double dose to make up for forgotten doses. If you only remember during the night, or the next day, leave out the missed dose and carry on as usual.

 

Most common side effects ?

 

The most common side effects observed with haloperidol are depression, twisting movements, inability to sit still, tremors, dizziness, fall in blood pressure, visual disturbances, drowsiness, constipation, dry mouth, rash, difficulty in passing urine.
