Atenolol belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. Atenolol reduces heart rate and cardiac contractility and reduces blood pressure and heart rate. It is generally used to control high blood pressure, relieve chest pain (angina pectoris), control irregular heart beat and protect the heart in the early treatment after a heart attack.
