Alprostadil is a medicine that is similar to the natural substance in the body called prostaglandin E1. Alprostadil acts by widening the blood vessels and inhibiting the platelet aggregation so that blood can flow in the penis more easily. This makes easier for having an erection.

Alprostadil is used for “erectile dysfunction” including weak erections or impotence. The doctor may also use it to help find the exact cause of the erectile dysfunction along with other tests. Alprostadil’s similarity to prostaglandin E makes it a choice of treatment in congenital heart disease.
