What is Depression ?
Depression is perhaps one of the most common self misdiagnosed condition. People often confuse sadness with depression, and this term depression, is thus extremely misused.
Sadness is a very common emotion evoked in agonizing circumstances. All of us, in some part of life or other, have to face painful situations, and so sadness. However depression is a physical illness with more profound symptoms and depth. Depression stays for days, weeks, months or even years and thus more than just a passing phase of ‘feeling down’. Whereas sadness is almost always about emotions, depression manifests with both emotional and physical symptoms.
Depression, though is improved by self boosting mechanisms, it might well be noted that it can’t be totally lifted off with will or wish. That is why early diagnosis and prompt treatment is the best way to fight the severe consequences such as suicide.
