Arthritis is a common condition with easily identifiable symptoms, but a doctor needs to diagnose the condition for proper treatment.
Osteoarthritis - The classic sign is stiffness in joints when awaking. This stiffness slowly eases during the day. Also, there’s pain in the load bearing joints like knees, hips and spine during activities like walking. There’s also a restriction in the joint’s movement. The doctor may notice a crackling noise, swelling or tenderness in the joints.
Rheumatoid arthritis - The salient feature of this type of arthritis is that it starts from small joints and goes on to affect the larger joints. The joints involved are usually symmetrial so if a joint of the right side of the body is involved, the joint on the left side of the body hurts too. Pain and stiffness are present throughout the day and at any time of the day. However, usually the tenderness is more prevalent in the morning and slowly fades during the day as the person starts to move.
