Famotidine belongs to a group of medicines called ‘H2-blockers’. H2 is a neurotransmitter present in the body. By blocking H2 Famotidine decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used for the treatment of gastric ulcers, gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) - a condition in which acid and food from stomach pushes back to the food pipe, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It can also be used for the treatment of heartburn due to occasional acid reflux from the stomach.
